Detailed Introduction

There are two main kinds of courses offered by EWB, exam-oriented courses and quality courses, designed to help shape children into happy adolescents in the 21st century through knowledge learning and ability development. To teach the students according to their aptitude, EWB’s courses mainly adopt one-on-one teaching mode and one-to-many teaching in some areas. Each child is equipped with a volunteer teacher of different disciplines and individualized curriculum design according to their learning ability. Until now, EWB has helped more than 400 children, covering areas like Liaoning, Gansu, Yunnan province and etc. A total of 20 courses have been offered. With the joint efforts of more than 300 volunteer teachers, the total duration of lectures has exceeded 20,000 hours and the preparation time has exceeded 80,000 hours.

In general, the test-oriented course is a real-time online education course, which helps disadvantaged children to enhance their test-taking ability.  Through the real-time interaction between teachers and students by online video, it can examine students’ learning situations, including their grasp of certain knowledge points in the stage of acquiring primary knowledge, their grasp of good learning habits, and their grasp of test-taking skills. The chief purpose of the test-oriented course is to aid school teachers’ teaching and provide test-taking training for students so as to improve students’ academic performance, strengthen the knowledge base, enhance their interest and confidence in learning. The EWB exam-oriented course is for the elementary school to junior high school, covering the following subjects: mathematics, English, Chinese, biology, physics, chemistry, and geography.

While giving examination- oriented classes, EWB is committed to breaking traditional way of teaching which is spoon-feed, by guiding students to solve problems by explaining teaching methods, helping students to deal with specific questions by stimulating their interest and reinforcing their understanding. In this way, students could develop the keen ability to answer questions as well as draw inferences from one question to another, so that they do not have to swim in the sea of exercises. What they could experience is the charm of independent thinking and the fun of logical thinking by grasping basic knowledge points and problem- solving methods. The teaching process of the examination-oriented class strictly follows five steps which are an introduction, practice, short break, testing, take- away and communication. The class time is reasonably allocated to each step to ensure students can absorb the teaching materials to the maximized extent.

To ensure the quality of teaching, EWB has developed detailed teaching standards for volunteer teacher’s reference. Meanwhile, EWB has designed corresponding teaching evaluation standards and set up a class review group to supervise class quality. EWB data collection group is improving the massive database for class preparation which includes knowledge extension of textbooks used for examination- oriented classes, extraction of difficult knowledge points and essential exercises as well as famous teacher’s class videos. The group is responsible for collecting and integrating information for volunteer teachers to ensure the consistency of teaching content. Also, targeting volunteer teacher’s puzzles and shortcomings, EWB has set up a training group on the purpose of improving their teaching skills, teaching abilities and knowledge levels.

Quality-oriented courses are instant online education courses and a series of original courses designed by EWB for the improvement of the quality of disadvantaged children in terms of improving their skills, exploring their potential and bordering their horizons. There’re now  twelve quality-oriented courses of EWB in total which contents are full of variety and bound up with the demand of the disadvantaged children EWB targeted, including the Painting Course for Emotional Outlet, Computer Programming Course, Interested-oriented Science Course, Show You the World, Healthy Course, Reading Course, Psychological Course, Astronomy Course, Memory Course, Art Appreciation Course, Etiquette Course, and Life Education Course.

Considering the requirement of the 21st century and the current learning situation of natural science and humanity in school, the Computer Programming Course, Interested-oriented Science Course, Memory Course, and Reading Course initially are laid a solid foundation on improving children’s ability to acquire knowledge. For instance, the computer programming course uses scratch website developed by MIT as teaching platform to help children understand the basics of programming and enhance their logical thinking and capability of problem-solving via gamification learning while the Interested-oriented Science Course places emphasis on hands-on experiment, hoping to cultivate children’s enthusiasm of science through experiment, observation, and analysis. As for the Memory Course, it aims at developing children’s learning ability in a technical way with advanced memory methods and high efficient study skills instead of specific knowledge retention. Also, the materials of Reading Course are ranged from picture-books to profound works of literature in accord with the various need of children at different ages to help them engage with their world and develop their reading skills.

EWB provides various kinds of courses, whose contents include physical and mental health, painting, etiquette, and life education. These courses focus on children’s physical and mental health and they are aimed at improving children’s daily living skills. 

The contents of physical health courses include sex education and the basic knowledge of personal hygiene. With these courses, EWB wants to provide more educational resources in less-developed areas and teach children the importance of self-protection.

Mental health courses and painting courses focus on children’s psychological conditions, helping them recover from mental breakdowns and learn from personal experiences. Courses on life education endeavor to demonstrate the relation between man and nature, as well as the relation between life and death, wishing to build healthy outlooks on life, the world, and social values. In life education courses, EWB teachers try to provide positive guidance via communication. Etiquette courses are aimed at improving children’s social skills. With examples of real-life situations given in etiquette courses, children can gain confidence and fit in their social groups better.

Geography, art, and astronomy courses are aimed at broadening children’s horizons. Geography courses teach the basic knowledge of different countries and introduce various forms of culture. In courses of art and astronomy, EWB teachers try to explain abstract concepts with the help of interesting stories and improve children’s ability to discover beauty in their daily life.
