1. The Examination-oriented Course and the Quality-oriented Course

Considering the current education for underprivileged children in less-developed areas, EWB set up two kinds of courses, which are the examination-oriented course and the quality-oriented course. The examination-oriented course is an online course, aimed at helping children improve their exam-taking ability. In EWB,  a video-conference system is widely used in real-time teaching. EWB teachers help children grasp the basic knowledge point and examination techniques, and eventually guide them to develop good learning habits. The development of children’s comprehensive quality is the main target in the quality-oriented course of  EWB. Volunteer teachers give quality-oriented lessons with various topics, including reading skills, personal hygiene, and English.

2. Introduction of the exam-oriented course

EWB’s exam-oriented course is targeted at students from elementary school to junior high school. The main content of the course is to consolidate the knowledge that children have learned in school and critical points of examinations. The specific courses that currently opened are math, English, Chinese, biology, physics, chemistry, and geology. Taking account of the education situations of all provinces, no matter in which province, Chinese, math, and English are the most important subjects which may have a determinant influence on the final scores of high school and college entrance examinations. Therefore, in our exam-oriented course, we will focus more on Chinese, math, and English. At the same time, based on the different promotions of scores in different regions, we will also rightly provide courses for other subjects. Additionally, in our exam-oriented course, we will abandon the traditional spoon-feeding teaching method. Instead, we will adapt the heuristic model of teaching to guide children to solve the problems logically. By arousing the curiosity of children and deepening their understanding of the key knowledge, we can lead the children to find answers to the specific questions. This “Looking beyond the surface” heuristic mode of teaching can equip children with stronger problem-solving abilities as well as strengthening their capabilities of inferring to similar problems. In this way, children can avoid repetitive exercising. Instead, they will be able to think divergently and draw parallels from inference by grasping the necessary knowledge and problem-solving methods. In the end, they will enjoy the fun of independent thinking and logical thinking.

3. Introduction to the exam-oriented (tutorial) course

The EWB tutorial course is designed for students from Grade one to Grade six. The content of the course is designed to stimulate students’ learning interest, consolidate knowledge of textbooks and cultivate good study habits. Given different learning situations of different students, the tutorial course revises what they have learned at school. The course mainly starts from Math, Chinese, and English. In the tutorial class, the teacher can freely arrange the lecture according to the class outline of the head teacher. Compared with the junior high school curriculum, the tutorial classes of primary school students mainly focus on the basic knowledge, such as reviewing the basic knowledge and forming a habit.

The course is designed to inspire students’ interests and guide them to actively seek knowledge by combining the subject knowledge with students’ interests and hobbies. The course is intended to raise students’ scores by consolidating what they’ve learned and previewing what they’ll learn at school.Also, our teachers guide students to establish sound values and obtain a wholesome personality by sharing life events with students.
